Christening or Baptism?
A Christening is the official celebration which welcomes your child into your chosen faith and formally announces the name you have chosen them to carry. Essentially, a Christening is the child's first initiation into the relgious faith.
Traditionally a Christening is a passive tradition as it is the parent's choice to raise their child in the Christian faith and not the child's. The baby is sprinkled with water by the priest or vicar over a small font and parents and godparents promise to raise their child in the Christian faith and set a good example. Parent's choose appropriate godparents who are strong in their chosen faith to help guide and nuture the child as they grow older. The term Christening therefore should mainly be used when referring to infant baptisms.
The term Baptism on the other hand should mainly be used when the person being baptised has made the decision themselves. Traditionally, the act of baptism involves being fully submerged in a pool of water, instead of just being sprinked with water. The ceremony therefore is usually performed on an older child or adult. Furthermore, the decision being made to enter the Christian faith is being taken solely by the child or adult and not by the parents.
Although the words Christening and Baptism are often used interchangeably, there are noteable differences in their true meaning.
